Below are the areas of opportunities available in the Allen Lee Hughes Internship Program. Arena Stage does not offer any training opportunities in acting.

Arts Administration
Marketing – assist with the implementation of creative audience-building initiatives; design and implement grassroots marketing efforts; assist with tracking sales reports; provide administrative support.

Media Relations – assist with the creation and compilation of materials for press packets; implement strategies to garner coverage of Arena Stage productions and programs; track media coverage; provide administrative support.

Development – assist in all areas of fundraising, including individuals, corporations and foundations; draft grant proposals and donor correspondence; research prospective donors; assist with the preparation and implementation of special events; provide administrative support.

Managing Director – work on special projects in support of the managing director, including budget analysis, contract development, board relations, and corporate and foundation research; attend senior staff, board, and committee meetings.

Finance and Human Resources – assist with budget tracking, accounts payable, and cash receipts; support HR office in employee benefits, worker’s compensation, and employee relations; assist with recruitment, including advertising, interviewing, and checking references; provide administrative support.

Artistic Opportunities
Dramaturgy/Literary Managementtrack, review and critique scripts; draft correspondence; conduct research for productions; prepare actor packets; provide administrative support.

Company Management – assist the company manager in the daily operations of the production department. This is an opportunity to gain experience in working with union contracts as well as general theatrical management of the theater’s season.

Producing/Castingassist the associate artistic director and the casting director. This is an opportunity to gain experience in artistic development, contracts, line producing, casting, and artist-theater relations.

community engagement opportunities
The Community Engagement Division’s purpose is to build a future for the American theater by cultivating future theater professionals, attracting new audiences, and enriching theater education in the schools and in the community at large. Candidates must be committed to arts education and community involvement and have excellent communication skills, computer literacy, attention to detail, knowledge of theater, and a passion for working with people.

Community Engagement Intern: Writing & Research This intern researches and writes the education publications for the plays in Arena Stage’s season: Arena’s Page, a study guide for students; and Curriculum Connections for teachers. Candidates must be excellent writers and have experience with both library and online research. Successful candidate will accumulate a range of writing samples for a professional portfolio. This is a non-teaching position. Writing sample required: 250-word sample should demonstrate clear, concise, accessible writing appropriate to a study guide, newspaper article, or program note. Please avoid technical or overly academic writing.

Community Engagement Intern: Teaching & Community Outreach This internship splits time between teaching at Camp Arena Stage, a summer multi-arts (theater, dance, music, visual art) camp for ages 8 to 15, and planning and helping to implement a variety of community outreach programs. Successful candidate must enjoy working with young people from diverse backgrounds.
