Performing Arts: The Normal HeartMay 8, 2012
Washington Magazine
By Kinne Chapin
AIDS is demanding attention in D.C. this year, and not a moment too soon– the virus affects 3% of Washington’s population in comparison with 1% of the general population, according to the World Health Organization. This year, the 2012 International AIDS Conference will come to the District, providing the optimal opportunity to talk about how we can better the health of our city. But the discussion needn’t end in the conference room – the July Conference will be associated with an independent artistic performance for the first time, Arena Stage‘s production of the 2011 Broadway hit The Normal Heart. Kate Baldwin, star of Arena Stage's The Music Man, is a methodical actorMay 3, 2012
Washington Post
Chip Crews
Being born to a banker father and a scientist mother wouldn’t seem to guarantee success on the musical stage, but it’s worked out pretty well for Kate Baldwin. But from the start, her method of attack on her chosen field was derived directly from her parents’ straightforward approach to theirs. Read more
There They Blow! Hundreds of Trombonists to Play Nationals ParkApril 26, 2012
The DCist
By Benjamin R. Freed
On June 1, it's going to get brassy at Nationals Park. At least 500 trombones' worth of brassy, in fact. And that's 424 more trombones than required for the scheduled repertoire.
Before a Friday evening game against the Atlanta Braves, the Nationals will help promote Arena Stage's production of The Music Man, which opens May 11, with an assembly of hundreds of trombonists. The show's musical director, Lawrence Goldberg, wil lead the band in a performance of "76 Trombones." Read more

“Eugene O’Neill’s first play, produced only once before in 1920, before it disappeared for nearly a hundred years, had its second staging at Arena last month. Was that a good idea? It is 1912.
