2008-2009 Workshops for Teachers

Arena Stage offers professional development workshops for elementary, middle and high school teachers, youth professionals, and artists through its Community Engagement Division.  Workshops are open to teachers in all content areas and explore a variety of topics ranging from dramatic writing to hip hop.  No prior experience in theater is necessary.

All workshops take place at Arena Stage at 14th and T Streets, NW, Washington DC., unless otherwise indicated. Payment may be made by check (payable to Arena Stage) or major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express).

Playwriting for the Classroom
Open to upper elementary, middle and high school teachers in all content areas, youth professionals and artists

Playwriting can be used in any class or content area. Focusing on an approachable ten-minute play format, explore dialogue, character and plot and its possibilities in your classroom. Fun, interactive, concise and easily replicated with students, this workshop is an excellent introduction to playwriting techniques from first draft to revisions. Delve into poetry, rap, theater, movement and music as you explore Hip Hop’s powerful and positive American roots.  This eye-opening and interactive workshop enables you and your students to explore hip hop’s rich vocabulary of spoken word, verbal improvisation, cultural awareness and artistic expression.

Moving Stories: A Literacy and Drama Encounter

Move, shimmy, and shake to stories galore.  This encounter is 100% interactive, combining diverse children's literature, performance, song, and sign language.  Explore beloved stories through dynamic drama activities while meeting important literacy standards. Learn how to create engaging lesson plans based on almost any children’s literature picture book.
