voices of now
Voices of Now is a year-long after-school drama program in which students gain the skills to grow into well-rounded artists. Through creative writing, improvisation, play-building and acting, Voices of Now gives students a holistic artistic experience and challenges them to recount the stories that shape their lives.
Voices of Now is tailored to middle school students.
In the fall:
Students sign up to participate in four workshops, each workshop introducing an actor’s tool: movement, vocal expression, creativity and teamwork. Students who complete all four workshops will be invited to audition for the Voices of Now Ensemble.
In the spring:
The Voices of Now Ensemble, an exclusive group of student actors, creates an original play to be performed throughout the community. To audition for the Ensemble, students must have attended all required Voices of Now workshops in the fall as well as demonstrate enthusiasm and an ability to work with others during the audition process.
Expectations
Voices of Now is a prestigious program for dedicated, driven students. Acceptance into the Ensemble is not based on artistic talent. Rather, it is based on students’ energy, listening skills and ability to work well with peers. Students are expected to approach the program with discipline, focus and commitment.
Accomplishments
Voices of Now is a nationally recognized program. In addition to performing within the community, past Ensembles have performed at such venues as Arena Stage, Imagination Stage in Bethesda and Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.
Arena Stage partners with a limited number of schools each year to provide Voices of Now. If you are interested in bringing Voices of Now to your school next year, contact us at (202) 234-5782 or e-mail education@arenastage.org
